depression

OFF – TRACK

Our rich heritage is one that we oft gloat over, beef our chest for and feel proud of. All things have got an end-good or bad. Natural cyclic waves (?) have taken the toll and we are passing through a phase of depression.

Highly populous, our country is rich in manpower, however two pronged – positive and negative; which to adopt simply depends on our attitude.

Religious fanaticism and political opportunism are the major two dark forces that holds us back and puts us down. “Who has said?” is always the question, “what is said?” is never. It is all treason; the list is exhaustive and the hope is afar. But, where does the crux of the problem lie?

I had a small cage for ‘love birds’. From three pairs, when it has grown to ten I rejoiced – vivacious colours, melodious cooing and sweet chirpling. One night, I woke up hearing unusual sounds of frightened clatter and frantic flapping and to my utter dismay found the beautiful nymphs turned fierce fighters. My heart fell that morning, seeing a few dead and the kins pecking on the carcass. It was only the beginning. No, there was no scarcity for food. Then why? Have they taken a liking for their kin’s flesh and blood? – Cannibalism. I am baffled, bewildered and of course depressed.

Oh! Rev. Malthus, it is not the food alone, there is something more; shelter, save, security? I know not what? Can anybody help?
